Skilled Migration: New Occupations Added
On 11 March 2019, changes were made to the combined list of eligible skilled occupations. The Department of Home Affairs states the addition of further occupations is to ensure that the entry of skill foreign workers remains carefully regulated to fill Australia’s skill gaps in the economy.
There has been 36 occupations added to the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Some occupations include Tennis Coach, Footballer and Horse Trainer.
The MLTSSL is for employers to find highly skilled and qualified foreign workers to fill the gaps in Australian occupations. Foreign workers can work for up to four years in Australia and may be eligible for permanent residency.
18 new occupations have also been added onto the Regional Skilled Occupations List (RSOL) that include Sheep Farmer, Mixed Crop Farmer and Beef Cattle Farmer. The introduction of agriculture based occupations is an attempt to meet skill shortage and assist farmers struggling with drought.
The RSOL allows employers to sponsor foreign employees who may live and work in Australia for up to 4 years in regional Australia.
