Foreign Skilled Labour in response to Construction Industry Staffing Shortage

The Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) has announced that over the next year, employers will be allowed to import greater numbers of carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians to Australia.

The DOHA have identified what is referred to as the ‘tradie drought’ and ‘apprenticeship crash’ leading to a shortage of tradies in Australia. The shortage in tradies appears to be a result of unsatisfied Generation - Y seeking alternative career paths as a result of low income earned while on apprenticeships.

As a result of the tradie shortage, the DOHA has replaced occupations such as Dental Technicians and Mining Engineers with new skilled occupation list vacancies for foreign tradies including: construction project managers, project builders, engineering managers, and mining production managers.

The new changes to the Skilled Occupation List are a direct result of the extensive lobbying from the industry and have come into effect as of 1 July 2016.

The Full list of eligible professions can be found on the 2016-2017 Skilled Occupation List at https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Work/Skills-assessment-and-assessing-authorities/skilled-occupations-lists .
