Employer’s obligations to interns

16 June 2015

Does your business or organisation engage interns or students for work experience?  Is your business or organisation familiar with the boundaries between legitimate paid employment and legitimate unpaid internships?

Most employment law rights and obligations may be found in the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).  The Act does not directly deal with the concepts of work experience or internships, however makes clear that a person will not be an employee (and not entitled to payment) if they are undertaking a formal vocational placement.

If you would like further information about work experience and internships within your organisation or business, please contact us for an obligation free appointment with one of our experience practitioners.
